About

The desire to share and shape their children’s first school experiences led a group of dedicated parents to create San Jose Parents Participating Nursery School (SJPPNS) in 1951. SJPPNS is a parent co-operative (co-op), located in Willow Glen at 2180 Radio Avenue, across from Lincoln Glen Park. We are run by parents and directed by credentialed teachers/directors (who were also co-op parents with their children).

Families are the heart of a co-op. It is as much your school as your child’s. You learn right along with your children while working in the classroom, attending weekly conferences, and participating in evening meetings. Participation on committees and attendance at monthly parent meetings provide opportunities to supply energy and ideas and build community focus. Twice a year participation at Maintenance Work Days keep our school inviting. (A full list of requirements is described on our Family Requirements page.) Of course there are fun days for the entire family!

Your children gain hands-on experiences in our indoor-outdoor classroom through a variety of activities designed to encourage them to play, explore, problem solve, and discover the world around them. This provides a solid foundation for future social and academic success. (These are described on our Curriculum page).

A co-op is not for everyone. Participating in a co-op requires time, effort and dedication. Working with adults of differing backgrounds entails a unique blend of common trust and respect. Of course there are additional benefits for adults and children. Having a family member and more adults in the classroom often make the home to school transition easier. Family participation keeps tuitions low. Parents as well as children often find new friends at school. Creating a great co-op can create great bonds!

I heard about SJPPNS from a playgroup friend when my son was just about to have his first birthday. I really wanted to get him into a program where he could meet other children, play, and learn. I also wanted to be a part of that experience. I decided to drop by for a visit to check out the 1-Day program. My son loved it, he was ready to stay for the day, and I could not get over the great facility. We signed up, started in the Fall, and have been playing, learning, and sharing a special time together each week ever since.
